age 40 on 1880 census
Filed declaration of intent (1766) in Outagamie County WI on 11 Oct 1869 in which he stated that he had been born in Prussia in 1840, arrived in New York in April 1868, and forswore allegiance to Friederich Wilhelm, King of Prussia.
This family is enumerated on the 1880 federal census of Outagamie County, Wisconsin, in Greenville Township, Volume 21, enumeration district 125 as follows: Peter Switzer, age 40, farmer, born in Prussia, both parents born in Prussia; Theresa, w
ife, age 36*, born Wisconsin*, parents born in Austria; Joseph, son, age 5, born in Wisconsin; Anna, daughter, age 2, born in Wisconsin; John, son, age 6/12, born in Wisconsin.
In June of 1873, Peter Schweitzer and his brother-in-law, William Nussbaum, bought the property in New London on which William and Anna Nussbaum operated the Franklin House hotel and saloon. In May of 1876, Peter and Theresa Schweitzer appear to
have sold their share of the property to William Nussbaum. This information comes from the abstract of title.
Peter is listed in the Appleton City Directory of 1887-88 at saloon, N.S. College, 5 W of Walnut, residence, same. For 1889-90 and 1893-94, he is listed as saloon and boarding house at 985 College, residence same. In the latter, Joseph and Miss
Annie are listed at the same residence. In 1887-98, he is listed as saloon and hotel, 985 College, residence same. Miss Katie, Joseph, John, and Miss Annie are listed at the same residence. In 1899-1900, he is listed as saloon, 985 College, r
esidence same. Louis, Kate, Joseph, and Miss Annie are listed at the same residence.
* Census information on Theresa's age and place of birth is incorrect, as she is listed on a passenger list arriving in the U.S. in 1857 as age 2. The federal census of 1870 shows her as age 15, born in Austria.
