As told by Irene Ackerman on August 8, 2006, Age 94; 8:30PM to RobertA. & Lois M. Follmer. Irene gave us permission to type all of this information on thecomputer as she is so upset about Jolene not responding to her callsafter the death of Irene’s brother Milo in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Irenewanted us to have all the information possible as seen from herperspective. Father age 10-11 when he came over to America from Bohemia. Momma wasborn in Iowa in a one room cabin, then they built the house. Hismother & sister, Mary Martenec - Sister was 16 and married a mannamed (Martenec). They did work like housework back in those days.Moved to a farm in Cedar Rapids, dad went to a country in school inCedar rapids, Iowa school was in Amanas. Momma met daddy in thecountry school. Mother is from a family of 9 children - Hajek. Theyall lived on the farm. They raised their food, animals and cannedtheir own food. Dad had rabbits which they ate, fruit trees such aspear, peach, apples which they canned. There was no Social Securityat that time. The oldest was Mary, Frank, Momma, Annie, Joseph,Antoinette, Stillborn baby. Albiena, Blanche & Charlie. Mary must havehad a mental problem, she married and had twin boys. I never met her.Momma & daddy went to see her. She lived in Bell Plain, Iowa. Maryraised the window and said," Get out of here." Which is unusual forthe family. So Irene says Mary had a mental problem. Now on HelensHowsers’ side, wife of Clarence (Irene’s brother), Helen had a sisterof the name of Agnes whose oldest daughter hung herself several yearsago. Irene is beginning to think there is something wrong withJolene’s mind since Helen is Jolenes’ mother. Joelene does not speakto her mother or sister unless she has to - KayMarie or Helen. (school teacher changed the spelling of mommas nane to -Hieak, properspelling- Hajek) Mother’s oldest bother Frank never got married, always a bachelor.Very nice, always ate with us when he came to town on Sat or Sunday.Momma cooked up a nice meal. My grandmother on dad’s side lived withus until she passed away. Dad’s side of the family, he had one sisterhad Rudolph out of wed-lock and then had Stanley and William (Bill)they served in WWI (France). They got gassed which hurt their healthand they both had wives & children and couldn’t work their farmsanymore an ended up losing their farms, couldn’t pay taxes, etc andended up in the poor farm (Nursing Home Now). Dad almost had to go toWWI but didn’t have to because of having 5 children. Took single menfirst, etc. Milo was born on K street in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and thelady across the street came to help with the delivery. Everyone wasborn in the home. Irene and another girl Irma, and got a one-way ticket to New Orleansin 1941 Greyhound Bus, "Now girls your going down south and its notsafe to go alone." First night we got to Memphis Tenn. We stayed atthe YW and lots of girls were traveling and they had a huge room andcots. That night we went out on the town and we met some soldiers satat the table and had some drinks (1941) the next night we got on thebus and went to New Orleans. In the early evening we got to the hotelin New Orleans and left our bags at the hotel. Saw a car go by with alady who saw us and said, "Girls I know you are here from out of town, hop in the car and come with me." She took us to a ranch for the nightand we slept. We went out the next day looking for jobs (Jan) andstarted to waitress, By April Irma & I knew it would get hot andMuggy. Irma said she would stay in New Orleans but I got a one wayticket and went to Florida, Georgia, Virginia, etc. and met a girl wholived in NY City. She said, "Come to NY City and I will show youaround." I said my sister lives in Columbus so I am going up there. Igot a job at a steel company in bookkeeping. Then I decided to movehome again. Then I got the job at Quaker Oats at age 30 and workedthere 9.5 years. Worked as a book keeper, working with figures, analyzing. Irene left and went to Phoenix, AZ for a while workingfor a man as a bookkeeper. He had a number of hotels & motels in AZ &NV. From AZ she went to Las Vegas in 1953.One girl office for acontractor in Las Vegas. Irene has macular degeneration. Loved to sew, can her own fruits &veggies. Traveled the world. Every both &table was full expect one table with one man in it. Virginia askedwhere are we going to eat and so I said to ask if he minded if we eatwith him. He thought she was trying to make him as Virginia wastalking so much during the lunch! One time we were on a bus andVirginia was reading a magazine and when she got through with it, Iwas reading it, she said, "Why don’t you turn that page?" That’s justhow she was. She was a good traveling companion. Israel, Cruise Amazon, Europe several times, Spain & Portugal,Denmark & Norway with Mom (Shirley Follmer) , Switzerland was abeautiful place, Italy, Athens & Greek Islands, Chet worked for Titanium Company. Worked just a little bit because ofheart bypass. Then had a rotor router job on the side of his neck. Hesmoked a lot & drank quite a bit too. Chets’ Aunt Rose was a seamstress - never needed a pattern; could seea dress in a window and come home and make it, Also drove volunteertook WWII veterans around. Also had macular degeneration. He was ahandsome man and very charming. Too charming as when they lived in LasVegas, he cheated on her.
