Kievan Rus achieved its greatest power and splendor underYaroslavtheWisein the 11th century. Yaroslav made Kiev a great cityandbuiltmagnificentbuildings, including the notable Cathedral ofSaintSophia orHagia Sophiaof Kiev. Yaroslav did much to develop KievanRuseducationand culture. Healso revised the first Russian law code,theso-calledRusskaya Pravda orRussian Justice. After his death in1054,Kievan Rusdeclined. Yaroslav'sgrandson, Vladimir II Monomachus,madethe finalattempt to unite KievanRus, but after his death in1125thefragmentation continued as otherKievan RusprincipalitieschallengedKiev's supremacy. By the 13th century, the EastSlavic lands became a loosefederationofcity-states, held together bycommon language, religion,traditions,andcustoms. Although ruled bymembers of the house ofRurik,thesecity-states were often at war with oneanother. The areabecame aneasytarget for bands of invading AsiaticMongols.
