St. Vladimir the Great, Grand Prince of Kiev Born in 960 Acceded in 978Died on July 15 1015 at Kiev Vladimir was a pagan at the beginning of hisreign, which wasatfirstdevoted to consolidating his territories into aunifiedRussianstate. Bythe early 10th century, however, Kievan Rushadestablishedclosecommercial and cultural ties with the ByzantineEmpire,anOrthodoxChristian state. He converted in 988 toOrthodoxChristianityand madeOrthodoxy the official religion of KievanRus.Vladimir's choiceofOrthodox Christianity, rather than the Latinchurch(RomanCatholicism)or Islam, had an important influence on thefuture ofRussia. Vladimir's choice between the Christian and Islamicfaiths was saidtohavebeen heavily influenced by the fact that he enjoyedtheconsumptionofalcoholic beverages. The Christian faith allowed forthisand theIslamicfaith did not. Hence, Validimir chose Christianity.
St. Vladimir married in 980 to Rogneda von Polotzk, a Nun andadaughterofRognald of Polotzk. Rogneda died in 1002. St. Vladimir and Rogneda theNun had the following children: Yaroslav I the Wise, Grand Prince of KievVissavald of Kiev Iasaslav, Prince of Polotzk Mtsislav, Grand PrinceTschernigow Premislava Sviataslav Sudislav, Prince of Pskow Wizeslau,Prince of Novgorod St. Vladimir married after 1011 to Malfreda ofBohemia, a daughterofKuno,Count of Ohningen, by Richilde who was adaughter of Otto ItheGreat, Kingof Germany. St. Vladimir and Malfreda hada daughter: Dobroniega who married in 1038 to King Casimir I, King ofPoland.
