Thermopolis, Hot Springs County, Wyoming Library Obituary Files 2A 1907-6-23 Vernon Johnson Drowned Last Sunday morning Vernon C. Johnson, who owned a homestead on the Owl creek flats was drowned in a small irrigation ditch close by his home. He was alone at the time and only circumstances tell how the tragedy occurred. It seems that he had led a span of horses to water at the ditch and that while waiting for them to drink he was taken with an epileptic attack to which he was subject. Marks in the soft earth plainly showed where both hands and one knee had struck. He undoubtedly fell or rolled into the ditch and drowned before he regained consciousness. About an hour later he was missed and a search was made. His hat was found close to a bridge about three hundred yards from the place where he fell, and under the bridge the searchers made the gruesome find of the body, wedged in so tightly that the bridge had to be torn up before it could be gotten out. The funeral was held from the M.E. church here Monday afternoon, Rev. Chas. M. Bolin officiating. As a token of the esteem in which deceased was held the church was packed to the doors. Vernon C. Johnson was born at Union, Michigan, April 11, 1883. He came to Wyoming with his father when a small boy and has lived near this city for the past eight or nine years. He was a young man of splendid habits, and no one can be found to speak a disparaging word of him. He leaves a father, A. I. Johnson, a sister Mrs. J. C. Slane, and two brothers Herman I. and Earl Johnson, all living near Thermopolis. There is also a younger brother living in Iowa.
