! Emigrated to Northumberland VA 1662. Was married to Ann ? and then

William Coppidge, nephew of Edward of Maryland and John of Lower Norfolk,
came to Virginia about 1662, at the age of 16, being imported by Henry Mayes
along with Henry Mayes, James White, Wm. Evans, Richd. Symmons, (Wm.

Richard Lee and Capt. John Howson, both grandsons of Col. Richard Lee. He
purchased land of Capt. John Swanson, and the Lees and Swansons, as well as
the Howsons, figure in the ancestry of this William's grandchildren and
great-great grandchildren. On 17 Mar 1679-80 he was assigned 300 acres of
John Hughlett's land for transfer of 12 persons: John Williams, John Porkey,
Sarah Huch, John Church, Richard Banister, James Gording, Edward Ellis. From
"Coppedge/Freeman and Next of Kin" by Mildred C. Siever, William, through
the years had acquired thousands of acres of land in the Virginia tidelands,
and when he died, in 1700, he left each of his three sons a separate
plantation. Excerpts from the will of William Coppage of Northumberland Co.,
Va, 24 June 1698 in presence of William Browne, Maj. John Howson,Capt. Wm.
Howson: "to William Coppage my eldest son (jointly)...and to myyoungest
child Charles Coppedge, the plantation I now abode on with all housing,
orchard and land belonging there unto being one hundred fifty acres, beit
more or less; and my oldest son William to hold and enjoy the whole till his

# Surname: COPPEDGE
# Sex: M
# Birth: Bet. 1646 - 1648 1
# Death: 1700 1
# Note:
The earliest available records of the COPPAGE-COPPEDGE family place
this line in England although some of the oldest members had saxon
names. They may have been among the Saxons who invaded England and then,
as a colony, were quietly tucked away in some wooded area, isolated from
al people. Possibly they remained in the secluded forest ntil the
teachings of a fellow Saxon, Martin Luther, the German Monk in the 16th
century, resulted in the separation of the Protestant Churches from the
Roman Catholic Church. The group then came out of isolation, and a few
journeyed to the universities to study theology. One record lists a Rev.
William Copage of Queen's College, Oxford University, stood for a
Bachelor of Arts degree 1541-1542. One William Copage, Clerk and vicar
of Chadelworth, made his will in 1587. The COPPEDGES who came to America
were Protestants.
How did this family come by the name COPPEDGE or COPPAGE? The
theory adavanced by A. Maxim COPPAGE and John E. Manaham is that the
origin of the family name was from Coppedhegge, the small forest in
Buckinghampshire, England. Reference was made at an early date about
people from this forest who wree not foresters nor royal game keepers but
might have been simple woodcutters.
Mr. A. Maxim COPPAGE and Mr. John E. Manahan have published two
books on the COPPAGE-COPPEDGE lineage "The COPPAGE-COPPEDGE FAMILY" 1955
and the "COPPAGE-COPPEDGE CHRONICLE" 1975.

Datenbank
