TEETER DROPS DEAD IN NEW SHARON TODAY From Tuesday's Daily, Frank Teter was in receipt of a telegram this afternoon containing theinformation that Rev. I.P. Teter, of New Sharon, had fallen dead onthe streets in that town this afternoon. No cause is assigned for thesudden demise of Rev. Teter, but it is supposed to be due to heartdisease. About five years ago Rev. Teter was pastor of the Willardstreet Methodist church, and about twenty years ago he was pastor ofthe Main street Methodist church. He was a man of power in theconference, and during his lifetime had charge of many of its largepastorates. Rev. I.P. Teter, presiding elder of the Methodist Episcopal church inthe Ottumwa district, was a native of Lewis county, Virgina, and wasborn May 11, 1829. He was the son of James and Barbara Teter, bothnatives of the Old Dominion and both now deceased. Rev. Teter grew tomanhood in his native county, received careful training at the handsof most excellent parents and obtained his early education in thecommon schools of that section. Early in life he determined to becomea minister of the Gospel and with that end in view closely pursued acourse of scriptural study. He was married in Buchanan, Va., October25, 1849, to Miss Rebecca Jackson. After becoming fitted for ministerial labors, Mr. Teter resolved tocome west for a permanent location and accordingly crossed theMississippi in 1853, became identified with the Iowa conference. Inthe fall of 1861 having fully established in the confidence and esteemof the people in this section and deeply interested in its welfare hewas elected to the ninth general assembly of the state of Iowa, assenator from the Sixteenth district. He fulfilled the duties of hisposition with great credit, and then the Civil war being in progresshe became chaplin of the Seventh Iowa infantry and made the most ofhis opportunities of reading and study. He was a fluent speaker, posessed a valuable fund of information and without apparent effortsecured the close attention of his audience. His words were wellselected and his line of argument at once took hold of the reason andsympathy of his hearers. He had built up a good record and made forhimself hosts of friends in this conference.
