Children of Mildred & John: Comments on children are from Gilmer's Book

!. John Thornton Gilmer b. 20 Feb 1774 m. Martha Harvie . "He was a very handsome, honorable, upright man well educated for the practice of physic and devoted to it. He did not succeed, however, as most Broad River people did, in acquiring riches. He was like a musical instrument strung too high for the room in which it is played. His lofty, gentlemanly bearing did not move in unison with those upon whom he depended for practice. He removed to Kentucky, and afterwards to Illinois, where he still lives very much respected."

2. Nicholas Meriwether Gilmer b. 25 May 1776 m. Amelia Clarke - "Nicholas, the second son, married Amelia Clark, the daughter of Micajah Clark. He is a kind hearted, truthful, honest man, with uncommon capacity for mechanism. He removed to Kentucky more than thirty years ago, where he still resides. His wife became deranged as her mother had been. His trials have been the hardest to which good people are ever subjected. His patience in bearing them has been most exemplary"

3. Harrison Blair Gilmer b. 8 Aug 1778 m. Gabriel Christian - "Married Gabriel Christian, a Methodist preacher, whom scarcely any one ever heard from inclination the second time. Though he was wanting in the powers to persuade others to become Christians, he followed faithfully the straight and narrow path himself. Mrs. Christian was a mild, amiable woman."

4. Francis Meriwether Gilmer b. 15 Oct 1780 m. his 1st cousin once removed, Martha Jamison Barnett "He removed to Montgomery, Alabama, where he still resides. He is very industrious, and has acquired great wealth. His wife is a very sensible, energetic woman."

5. Elizabeth Gilmer b.4 Feb 1783 m. William Thomas McGehee - "They resided on Goosepond Creek, at the place marked as his on the map of the Broad River Settlement. Tom was a rough, truthful, hard-working man. His wife, though pretty, was very attentive to her domestic affairs."

6. Sally Lewis Gilmer b. 27 Jul 1785 m. Burkenhead Taliaferro - "She married Burton Taliaferro, the brother of Col. Benjamin Taliaferro. She died within the year afterwards, leaving a daughter, who died whilst a child."

7. George Oglethorpe Gilmer b. 27 Dec 1787 m. Martha Johnson - "A man of decision, enterprise, and good understanding. He removed to Kentucky, then to Alabama, and afterwards to Louisiana, where he died. He married Martha Johnson, daughter of Nicholas Johnson, of Broad River. His son James Blair Gilmer was enterprising to recklessness and very determined in his purposes. He is possessed of one of the largest planting estates in the United States. His crop of cotton the year 1850 exceeded three thousand bags."

8. David Gilmer b. 2 May 1790 m. Virginia Clark - "He married a daughter of Micajah Clark. She became deranged like her mother and sister. He now resides in Arkansas."

9. Jane Meriwether Gilmer b. 4 May 1792 m. 1st Thomas Johnson and 2nd Abner McGehee -"She was a stirring, bustling woman, and made herself very acceptable to both her husbands."
