1st justice of Louisa Co VA

Some of his friends were: Peter Jefferson (father of Thomas Jefferson); Col. Robert Lewis who married his Aunt Jane Meriwether; and Dr. Thomas Walker who married his uncle's widow, Mildred (Thornton) Meriwether, and who was also the sister of his wife, Elizabeth Thornton

Thomas was described by Peachy Ridgeway Gilmer, (husband of Thomas' daughter Mary) as "a man of excellent character and great wealth."

There were 2 grandsons of Nicholas Meriwether II named Thomas. The first was the son of David Meriwether and Anne Holmes that married Elizabeth Thornton and was sometimes referred to as Thomas Meriwether Sr., or the elder as he was the older of the two. The other Thomas was the son of William Meriwether and Elizabeth Bushrod. The Meriwether Society bases the fact that this Thomas was the son of David Meriwether.

1. Thomas Sr. is only mentioned in the will as follows: "Item. I do give and bequeath unto Nicholas Meriwether son of my Grandson Thomas Meriwether a Negro boy about his own age to him and his Heirs forever." Now how do we know this is Thomas Sr., and not Thomas Jr.? Both had sons named Nicholas but the son of William died before the will was written. We know this from the fact that this Nicholas' widow married Dr. Thomas Walker about 1741. Also in the will there is: " Item: I give and bequeath unto John Meriwether son to my son William Meriwether.......Land that is laid off next to his Brother Nicholas Meriwether deceased." Why wasn't Thomas Sr. given anything in the will? The reason is that Nicholas II had already taken care of him as shown in the next item.

2. On December 4, 1734 Nicholas II gave Thomas, son of David, 1270 acres of his southwest Mountain tract. This land is where Thomas Sr., his son Nicholas and his grandson William Douglas Meriwether lived and includes the property known as "Cloverfields". In his grandfather's will Thomas Jr., son of William, also was to receive a portion of the Mountain Tract after the death of his grandmother but that was at the other end of the tract.

3. In a letter dated 10/21/1841, William Douglas Meriwether of "Cloverfields" and grandson of Thomas Meriwether Sr., lists his ancestors starting with Nicholas II, then David Meriwether and Anne Holmes. He says "When my grandfather Thomas Meriwether was born I have no account, I suppose 1708. He married Elizabeth Thornton of the town of Fredericksburg". (This information came from Guy Meriwether Benson of the Meriwether Society and is acceptable to us until concrete evidence proves otherwise. M.W. Cooper & P.W. Penney)

Louisa County Court Records - "I give to my grandson, Thomas Meriwether son to my son David Meriwether and to his heirs forever two Negro Slaves by name Emanuel a Negro man and Queen a Negro Woman with their increase, the said slaves he has had some time in his possession.

As witness my hand this 29th day of November 1734" Nicholas Meriwether

I, Nicholas Meriwether, of St. Martin's Parish -- for the paternal love I bear unto my grandson, Thomas Meriwether, son of David Meriwether --- I do give 1270 acres--- being part of a larger tract.

Wit: Nicholas Meriwether Jr., Solomon King ( Johnes?) 5 Dec 1734

23 Mar 1762 - Deed from Thomas Meriwether to Robert Lewis 856 acres in Albemarle C. (late Louisa Co.) part of tract granted to Col. Nicholas Meriwether deceased, and by him given to said Thomas. (Note, this shows why Thomas did not receive land by the will of 1743.)

Because of Thomas's large holding he was able to provide all of his sons with great plantations when they married, which was usually at an early age. Thomas also gave several of his daughters plantations at the time of their marriages. He had about 9,000 acres in his several estates. By the time of his death in 1756 this holding had dwindled to 300 acres through his gifts of land to his children.
