"Attended Wm & Mary College where he studied medicine and for sometime afterwards. The war between France and England prevented his going to Edinburgh. He therefore declined to practice professionally. He moved from Amherst Co, VA to GA in 1784/85. Within the circle of his acquaintances, he was thought to be the best man in the world. He laid out a portion of the proceeds of his crop every year in medicines, and devoted as much of his time as was called for in attending upon the sick without charge. The equanimity of his temper, kindness of heart, and clearness of understanding, enabled him to do in the best manner all that duty and benevolence required of him. He had no pride or vanity. His house was the collecting-place for the poor and ignorant, the rich and the learned. He made himself equally acceptable to everyone. " First Settlers of Upper Georgia" by George R. Gilmer

Will of Francis Meriwether:

"In the name of God amen - I FRANCIS MERIWETHER of the County of Oglethorpe & State of Georgia, being of sound mind and memory. Do make, publish & declare this my last will and Testament in manner and form following,

1st It is my will that the plantation on which I live, shall be vested in my wife MARTHA MERIWETHER, for & during the term of her natural life, if she remains unmarried. For the purpose of supporting the family, & after her decease, or marriage, it is my will that all the land of which I am possessed or to which I have any right, be equally divided between my two sons VALENTINE H. & NICHOLAS & their heirs forever; when they come of age or marry. If either should die under age & without issue alive at the time of his death, then the whole to go to the survivors, & if my wife should marry then she is to have only one third part of the plantation for life.

2nd I give to each of my two sons VALENTINE H. & NICHOLAS when they come of age or marry, a

likely negro boy; the negroes to be as near their own age as the situation of my negro property will admit.

3rd I give to my daughter LUCY when she shall marry, or call for them, one negro boy or young fellow & my negro girl Queen & if Queen should die before she is called for or taken off, She is to have a young negro girl in her (room?).

4th I give to my daughter MARTHA one negro girl & one negro boy; & to each of my other daughters NANCY & _SALLY when they shall marry or come of age, one negro boy, as near their own ages as the state of my negro property will allow. Also one negro girl to each of them to be taken out of my stock of negroes.

5th It is my will that after the above disposition of my slaves is made among the children above

mentioned, that the remainder be (listed) in the possession of my wife for the purpose of supporting the family during her life, if she should remain unmarried; but if she should marry, then to have only one half the remainder for her life & after her decease then the whole of the remainder of my negroes to be equally divided among.... (The last line of page is not clear)

6th I give to my wife all my household furniture to be disposed of by her amongst my children, in such manner & at such time as she may think proper.

7th It is my will that the whole of my stock of horses, cattle, sheep, & hogs remain in the possession of my wife upon the plantation for the use of the family, & that she have a power of disposing of the (horned) cattle among my daughters as she may think proper.

8th I recommend to my executors that if convenient to procure a horse out of the increase of my stock of horses for each of my daughters who has not had one given to them.

FAMILY PUZZLERS

"The Family Bible gives Martha's date of death as 1818 - correct if she was only 14 days from being 75 years old"

Francis Meriwether Bible as given in GA BIBLE RECORDS states he was son of Nicholas Meriwether which is incorrect. The births of children give only year - some inconsistent with other exact records found. It states Francis b 10/13/1737 came to GA 1784 d 1/2/1803 m about 1765 Martha Jamison who d 5/29/1818

The will of Francis Meriwether mentions daughter Martha. No one seems to recognize her as a child but she must have been living when he wrote his will. The 3 daughters not mentioned in will were reprsented as their husbands were 3 of the 4 executors.
