He was buried o n 6 Jan 1644/45 in Berkhamsted, Bucks, England. St Peter's Church Churchwarde n of St. Peters, in Berkhamsted aft 1610. He was a Justice of the Peace, Membe r of Parliament, Agent for the Duch y of Cornwall in Berkhamsted abt 1612. Thi s was the time of enclosures in Ber khamsted, in which he was involved with th e Duchy lands. He was duputed to se lect 30 acres 'lying west upon the former inclosed grounds (Colharbour Farm), north uppon an highway leading from the gr eat heath towards Aldbury, east up pon the opn Frith (Common) and south uppon the old fence of the Parke,' for t he purpose. Left legacies to his children and grandchildren. Receipt in the a ccounts to the vestry includes 3/4d from h im for the burial of his son George , in the church. Electd Sidesman in 1612 a nd signed the vestry proceedings th at year, presented on 9 Apr 1613 in which he contributes another 3/4 d for hi s child Martha's grave. The Prince of Wale s visited Berkhamsted in 1616 to be greeted by an oration by a student at Berk hamsted Grammar School. In 1613 a levy for repairs to the Church reveals that William's rae was the 6th highe st in the Parish based on holding 23 acres ara ble, 2.5 acres meadow, and othe r wealth. One of the first 'Gentlemen' of 12 n ew Capital Burgesses when King James I granted the town a new Charter on 18 Ju l 1618. He signed and approved the Vestry accounts for repair of the bell on 22 Oct 1620. Elected Churchwar den on 26 Apr 1622. In 1622 he was storing or m arketing produce in the lofts int he market house. In 1622 he was assessed on a holding of 39 acres. In 162 5 he paid 6/8 d for Mrs. Mason's grave (mother i n law?) Baliff ( = Mayor0 in 1625. Called Mr. Pitkin after 1627. In 1625 more enclosure was called for by Charles I in order to raise money, even though no more division had been prom ised by the King's father. Behind the scenes barga ining was made with Berkham sted for loss of grazing on 400 acres, for 100 acr es for the town's poor. F ences were raised, probably under William's order, a nd torn down by Northchur ch farmers on an Aug 1640 night. They prevailed and it wasn't for another 220 years that Lord Brownlow who owned the Duchy rights enclosed the same 400 ac res. This enclosure also did not previal,however. Pa id 6/8 d for his wife Jan e's grave in Apr 1628; she had died in childbirth (J ane). Chief Burgess in 16 28. Responsible for helping to distribute timber to the poor from the King. H e had a corne loft over the market house on 1 Apr 16 30. He signed minutes of Vestry meetings in 1631 where problems about Church d issention and other acti vities were noted. In 1632 he was assessed on 196 acr es, the second largest i n the parish. Took office as an Overseer fo the Poor in 1633 and he sold the Churchwardens some timber. He was assessed for Church repairs in 1634/35. B ailiff, Justice of the Peace, and Member of Parliament i n 1636. Approved the bonds for the Rector's stock of the poor in Dec 1637.
