Captain Benjamin Stephens/Stevens was born at Plainfield, Connecticut,April 17, 1713. He married in North Carolina, Elizabeth -------- . He wasliving in Canaan November 17, 1743, and was admitted an inhabitantDecember 12, 1743. He was surveyor of highways in 1745; selectman andtithing-man in 1749; and served in the French and Indian War as Ensign inLieutenant -Colonel Tarbal Whitney's Company at the relief of FortWilliam Henry, New York, in August 1757. He was a representative fromCanaan in the Colonial Legislature 1764, 1765, 1767, 1768, 1769. Captain Stephens/Stevens died in Canaan in 1787, and his widow died May17, 1809, aged 88. April 28, 1789, a deed on record at Canaan, Connecticut was made byElizabeth Stevens, widow of Benjamin Stevens, Gershom Hewett and BettyHewitt, William Newell and Mary Newell, Obediah Brown and Drusilla Brown,all of Canaan, as the only surviving children and heirs of BenjaminStevens. *Children are listed in Canaan Records* *The above information was obtained from the "Stephens/Stevens Genealogy"by Plowdon Stevens (1909). It is believed that Benjamin, Andrew, and Phineas Stephens, brothers,left Connecticutt in the early 1700's and migrated to Onslow County,North Carolina. The records of Canaan, Connecticutt reveal that Benjaminwas "admitted" as a resident in 1743. This would indicate that he hadleft and returned. Andrew Stephens gave Power of Attorney to John Hugginsin 1734 in Onslow County, North Carolina. The transaction was recognized by Benjamin. More evidence of theirpresence in North Carolina in 1734.
