More About THOMAS STEPHENS: Fact 1: 18 February 1692/93, Baptized In Congregational Church atStonington, Connecticut. "The Stevens Genealogy" by Dr. Elmira Stevens Barney saysThomas Stevens(brother of Richard Stevens) was born on December 14, 1678. He married, first, on May 26, 1698, Mary Hall and they had six children: I. ThomasStevens, II. Phineas Stevens, III. Uria Stevens, who married his cousin,Sarah Stevens, born January 21, 1708, the daughter of Richard. He had aCaptain's commission in the French war and was a member of theSusquehannah Company, and one of the Commissioners to purchase theConnecticut claim from the Indians. He died in October, 1764. It issupposed that he died in Canada. IV. Andrew Stevens, V. Benjamin Stevens, VI. Zebulon Stevens. These wereall born at Plainfield, Conn. VII. Jesse Stevens, who died in infancy wasthe son of Thomas Stevens and his second wife. Mary Stevens came of an ancient and honorable family. Mrs. AntoinetteStevens of Canaan, Connecticut, (great grand-daughter of Andrew Stevens)furnishes the following: "Nicholas Stevens, or Stephens, was a BrigadierGeneral in Oliver Cromwell's army. From him descended Henry, and fromHenry, Thomas Stevens, who married May 29, 1702, Mary, daughter ofStephen and Ruth Hall, of Plainfield, Connecticut, and had: 1) Phineas,2) Samuel, 3) Uriah, 4) Zebulon, and 5) Andrew, who married EstherSafford. Thomas Stevens, Senior, bought a large tract of land in CanaanTownship, on which several of his sons settled. Uriah Stevens was one ofthe grantees of the town of Canaan, in 1745, his name being in theoriginal charter. Andrew Stevens was Representative in 1751 and 1761, andwas first Town Clerk of Canaan. He was a prominent man in public affairs.I have been told by a grandson of his that he was a holder of `DelawareRights,' and that in 1770, while on his way home, he was struck by afalling tree and killed. Esther Safford Stevens died March 13th, 1773, atCanaan. John Stevens, son of Andrew and Esther Safford Stevens, at theage of sixteen, enlisted in the French war under General Noah Amherst. Onaccount of his experience, he early took an active part in the war of theRevolution. He in company with Ethan Allen and others, conceived andexecuted the plan of taking Ticonderoga. Ramsey's History of theRevolution says, `Messrs. Dean, Wooster, Parsons, Stevens and others fromConnecticut, planned a scheme for obtaining possession of this importantpost.' He afterwards received a Captain's Commission, raised a largecompany, mostly in his own town, marched to the Cedars on the St.Lawrence River, where his company was placed under command of GeneralButterfield. They were attacked by a large force of British and Indians,to whom General Butterfield surrendered eight companies. CaptainsStevens, Sullivan, Green and Bliss were held as hostages for nearly threeyears, when the officers and men were stripped almost naked and turnedout to be sent home in the month of October. I have a portion of a diarykept by Benjamin Stevens, who was a cousin of John's and in his company.Their sufferings were incredible. At the commencement of the war JohnStevens was a thrifty farmer; at its close he was penniless, with a wifeand ten children (all daughters) to support. Olive Stevens, Mary'ssister, was wife of Samuel McClary, who was a member of Sheldon's LightBrigade which constituted Washington's Body Guard. He served during theentire war and was discharged at Newburg in 1783. John, Nathaniel, Andrew Junior, Safford and Oliver Stevens, all served inthe Revolutionary war."
