Jesse and Mary (Polly) Dykes Stephens moved to Jackson County, Florida in1850. It is possible that they moved to be closer to her family. Therewere many Dykes families living in Jackson County. The following Censusinformation could possibly lead to a connection to Mary. Laurens County,Georgia Census data indicates that Mary was born in South Carolina about1803. As the following Census information indicates below there wereseveral Dykes families living in Jackson County who had origins in SouthCarolina. Some of these could be related to Polly. Namely, Jordan, bornabout 1789, Joseph E., born about 1800; James, born about 1801; Nathan, born about 1793; Elias, born about 1784; Jacob H., born about 1798. Astheir birthdates show, they could be brothers who moved to Gadsden orJackson County, Florida about the same time. Legal records of Laurens County, Georgia show a Joseph Dykes as witnessto a land transaction between Beverly and Jesse Stephens, Sr. onSeptember 7, 1823. There may be a connection between Joseph and Mary(Polly) Dykes. In 1850 we find Jordan, Joseph E., and Jacob H. Dykes living in GadsdenCounty. Jacob H. would move to Jackson County before the 1860 Census. InJackson County, 1850, we find Elias, James, and Nathan. There is no dataconfirming that these people are brothers, but they are certainlyrelated. More research is needed in Laurens County to determine theirorigin. If the Census is accurate showing Amanda as the oldest child of Josephbeing born in Florida then Joseph was a resident of Gadsden County about1830. This could be the same Joseph Dykes that was in Laurens County inthe early 1800's and could be a brother to Mary. IMPORTANT Note: A Jacob H. Dykes was listed as a recipient of an OriginalLand Patent from the Federal Government on November 7, 1836 in the Hinsonarea of Gadsden County, Florida. This is the same Jacob shown above inthe 1850 Census of Gadsden County, Florida.
