Full name may be:-- "George" Ebenezer Stephens. According to an ancestorchart submitted by a Janet Thomas of Norcross, Georgia, George EbenezerStephens married Saphronia P. Elkins. They are the parents of SaphroniaJ. Stephens, who married William Thomas in 1867. However, this is theonly indication that Polly Elkins name was in fact, Saphronia and thatEbenezer's first name was George. This information is suspect since there is no supporting documentation. Ebenezer was born in Laurens County, Georgia in 1824. Marriage records ofGadsden County, Florida, show that Ebenezer Stephens married first toMary (Polly) Elkins, about 1846. He married second to Mary Ann ElizabethJohnson Newton, daughter of John Johnson and Elizabeth Ford on June 11,1863. Mary Ann was married first to Daniel Newton, Gadsden County,Florida, on March 3, 1851. The 1860 census of Decatur County, Georgia with a Concord, Florida postaladdress shows the following: E. Stephens, age 35, b. Ga. Mary, age 34, b. Ga. Green, age 13, Saphornia, age 12 Isabella, age 10 Mary, age 8 Martha, age 4 George, age 6 mos. Some explanation is due here to sort out the discrepancy between the 1860and 1870 census. In 1860, the third child of Ebenezer and Mary(Polly)Elkins is shown a Isabella. She is shown on the 1870 census as Sarah E.However, she signed her name as Sarah J. when she witnessed thedisposition of her father's estate. Factually, her name was probablySarah Isabella Stephens. Also the 1860 census shows the first child ofEbenezer and Mary (Polly) Elkins as Green. In 1870, he is shown as LewisG. The sixth child is shown as George in 1860. The 1870 census shows himto be Jacob. His name was later proven to be George Jacob Henry Stephens.Throughout his life he was known as Jake. Ebenezer and his first wife, Polly Elkins, had seven children. Mary Annand her first husband, Daniel, had four children. The union of Ebenezerand Mary on June 11, 1863, created a ready made family of elevenchildren. This union brought four additional children namely, Julia Ann,Nancy Candace, James, and Samuel. The 1870 Census of Attapulgus Pct., Decatur County, Georgia showsEdmond(sic) Stephens on page 105, household #255 as follows: Edmond (sic) Stephens, age 49, b. Fla. Mary Ann, age 37, b. Fla. Lewis G., age 22, b. Fla. Sarah E., age 18, b. Fla. Mary A.E., age 16, b. Ga. Martha, age 13, b. Ga. Jacob, age 10, b. Ga. Jesse, age 8, b. Ga. Julia A., age 6, b. Ga. Nancy, age 4, b. Ga. James, age 2, b. Ga. ** Samuel, age 9/12, b. Ga. Daniel J. Newton, age 16 Eveline Newton, age 13 Obviously, the ages of Daniel and Eveline Newton are incorrect. The 1880 Census of Decatur County, Georgia shows Eb Stephens, page 211,living in Household #168 as follows: Eb Stephens, age 56, b. Fla. Mary E., age 49, b. Fla. Jacob H., age 20, b. Ga. Jesse, age 18, b. Ga. Julia, age 15, b. Ga. Nancy, age 12, b. Ga. James, age 11, b. Ga. ** Samuel, age 9, b. Ga.
