"Meyer Jacobs, March 26, 1849 Clusserth., Germany, and arrived in America, March 1, 1867 coming from New York to Ligonier, where he engagedin the mercantil business, peddlign for several months, when an apportunity opened for him and he entered the emply of Straus Bros. and then for Straus & Meagber. In 1873 he branched out for himself and was amember of the firm of Jacobs and Goldsmith, which succeeded the firmStraus and Meagber, continuing until 1878, when the firm bought out Jacob Straus, jr. and Mr. Jacobs took charge of the clothing departmentin the room where he is at present engaged in business. The next stepwas the pruchasing of Goldsmith`s intererst in the dry goods and clothing store. He is interested in both stores being associated with hisbrother, Eli Jacobs, in the dry goods business and with this brotherand Mr. Bonem compose the clothing firm of M. Jacobs& Co. In 1887 they purchased the building in which their clothing store is located, enlarged and improved it, and the firm has one of the largest clothing stores in nothern Indiana.
