1853 Ship Mississippi Passenger Manifest

Louis Knabe, age 26, arrives at Port of Baltimore on September 14, 1853, two years and one week following the arrival of his parentsand brother, Theodor. Louis is accompanied by his wife, Louisa, 26, and his brother, Gotlieb (Gottl.), 27, and his wife, Louisa, 24. They emigrated from "Grossenfurra" (Grossfurra) just like their family two years ago. Grossenfurra, as best I can discern, is just a smidge NW of a nearly precise midpoint between Frankfurt and Berllin. It lies just SW of Hannover. More research: Grossfurra lies4 miles NW of the larger town of Sondershausen along the River Wipper. It is in a very flat valley. It is 173 miles from Grossfurra to Bremen to the north by today's roads. The brothers' listed occupation is "carpenser".

1860 US Census

"Lewis", 30, lives in Cincinnati's 12th ward with his wife, Louisa, 30, and three daughters: Alwyn, 7, Sophia, 4, and Louisa, 2. Alwyn was born in Prussia, indicating that she must have accompanied her parents to America when she was very young. Lewis is a carpenter. Under real estate valueI discern the figure, $65.00. As they are in a building with three other families, including brother, Gotlieb, I presume that this figure represents monthly rent. "Gotlib", 34, is next door with hiswife, Louisa, 30. They have four children: Herman, 8, born, like his parents, in Saxon, Gustoph, 5, Lewis, 3, and Adam, 1/12, all born in the US. Gotlieb is also a carpenter. His family's rent is $60. The difference in European birth sites for Lewis and Gotlieb could lend a clue when searching German records. It might also simply result from different reporting from the two different households.

1870 US Census - Feesburg, Pike, Brown, Ohio

Louis (perhaps "Lewis", transcribed as "Lenis") is living in Pike Twp, Brown Co., Ohio. He is 40years old, listed as being born in Schwartzburg, Sondershausen. His wife is Catherine, 29, born in Hesse-Darmstadt. Note that this is a different wife from the 1860 census when Louis was married toLouisa, both the same age (30 at the time). The oldest child is Alvina (Alwyn of the 1860 census) who is now 17, too old to be the daughter of Catherine. Alvina is listed as born in the same local as her father. Even though Alvina's occupation is listed as "Helps Mother", clearly, Catherine is not her mother. Sophia is 14, and Lizzie is 11. Since the 1860 census, Mary, 8, Henry, 7, Emma, 5, and Antony, 4, have been born, all in Ohio. Louis works in a carpentry shop. He owns real estate valued at $800 and a personal estate of 200. Sophia, Lizzie, Mary, William, and Henry are all listedas attending school. Interestingly, Lizzie, the 11 year old, is the only one listed as unable to read or write. From this census I added a new son, Antony, born abt 1866, who I assume is the child of Louis with wife, Louisa, but this assumption could be incorrect - Antony could be Catherine's son. If my assumption is correct then Louisa died in 1866 or after. Could she have died during childbirth with Antony? [My assumption is incorrect - 1880 census shows that Anton is son of Kate and her previous partner].

1870 US Census - Ward 18, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio

Louis, 40, works in a carprentry shop and lives with his brother, Gotlieb, 44, and Gotlieb's son, Herman, 18. All three live in a dwelling with three youngsters: Mary Schurter,13, her apparent brother, Ernst, 4, and a domestic servant, Eliza Lautenschlager, 15. Do the elders act as parents to these children? No other parents seem to be in residence. So many mysteries surround the Knabes of 1870 - what happened to Louis's wife, Louisa. They seem to live two lives - one in Pikes Twp, Brown County, perhaps on a farm, the other in Cincinnati's 12th Ward.

1880 US Census - Dayton, Campbell, KY, USA

Louis, 50, and wife, Kate (presumably Catherine), 40, live on Sixth St. in Dayton, Campbell Co., KY with their children, Carolina, 8, Hafford, 5, and Otto, 2. Anton Grimminger, who is presumably Kate's son from her previous marriage, also lives in the home. Louis is a carpenter and Kate is keeping house. Anton works in a gas meter shop, Carolina attends school and the other children are at home.

1900 US Census - Dayton St., Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio

Louis is 70, widowed, and living with his daughter, Sophia and her husband, Louis Fink. No occupation is given, he is presumably retired. Immigration information, i.e., date of 1953, is consistent with other records. Louis Fink, 37, is a policeman. Sophia gives her age as 37 but this is clearly incorrect as she was present on the 1860 census. Very often I see women's ages skewed younger, especially when they are actually older than their husbands. Louis and Sophia have two children, Albert, 12, and Alvina, 18, who is recently married to Charles Erhardt, a butcher, who is 21. They have a newborn son,Charles L.

In 1860 Louis and Gothleib and their families live in the same building in Cincinnati but by 1870 much has changed. Gottleib went off in1864 to serve in the Union military at the end of the Civil War. Louisa, wife of Louis, died, although I have not been able to locate her death records. Louis has remarried Catherine Grimminger. She, Louis's children, and chidren of her own have moved to Feesburg, Pike Twp, Brown County, Ohio. The 1870 census lists all of the children surnames as "Knabe" but on the 1880 they are distinguishedbetween "Knabe" and "Grimminger". Catherine is by then referred to as "Kate". One of the other trees on Ancestry has Louis marrying ....

I believe that Catherine (Kate) and her children and Louis's children moved to Feesburg, then Pike Township, Brown County (about 40 miles SW of Cinti) to a dwelling adjacent to Louis and Gottlieb's brother, Theodore. L and G and T's father, Heinrich (referred to as Henry), now widowed, lives with Theodore's family and makes baskets. Louis and Gottlieb live in what is apparently an apartment with Gottleib's son, Herman, and non-family members. Louis and Gottleib work in a carpentry shop. Herman (18) also works in a trade as a painter, perhaps in the same shop.

I believe that Louis managed to get himself counted twice on the 1870 census, once at this Cincinnati dwelling, and once with his wife, Catherine, in Brown County. The census facts pertaining to these two Louis's are identical and obviously they are with family members.

My mother referred occasionally to Brown County but I don't recall the context. I want to investigate whether any Knabe's or Knabe descendents still lived in BrownCounty when my mother was young.
