According to 1880 census Kate was born in Hessia and so were both of her parents - this is a very important fact. A child named Anton Grimminger is listed on this census. No relation to HOH was given but "Daughter" was written and then crossed out. Anton was born in Ohio, his father in Baden, and his mother in Hessia. This all makes sense - Kate is his mother but Louis is not his father. Anton is 15 yrs old and so born about 1865. Other children listed in the household are Carolina, 8, Hafford, 5, and Otto, 2. Because they are listed beneath Anton Grimminger and a line was placed through the Surname field the census summnarizer appended them with the surname, "Grimminger." But this is not so - note that all three were born in Ohio, their mother, Kate, in Hessia, and their fatherin Prussia. The Prussia birthplace does not match Anton's father's birthplace of Baden. It is logical, therefore, to deduce that these children belong to Kate and Louis and carry the last name, "Knabe." Since the oldest of these three, Carolina, is 8 and Anton, by Kate's previous marriage, is 15, we can assume that Louis and Catherine were married between 15 and 8 years earlier, or between 1865 and 1872. In fact, "Catherine", is listed as the wife of Louis on the 1870 census (ostensibly "Kate" is a nickname of this) and so they were married prior to this date.
