Notes for this person
William Jackson Hickman, son of Henry and Harriet Hickman, was born near Plevna, Missouri, February 22,1874. There he grew to manhood. He was one of a family of eight children, three girls and five boys. He was united to Emma Jones of Hedge City, Missouri, February 21,1897. November 17, 1904, Mr. and Mrs. Hickman and their two children, Carl and Mabel, came to Cherry County and homesteaded three miles southwest of Wood Lake. On December 31,1904, just forty-eight years prior to the day of Mr. Hickman's passing, they moved into their new home. They experienced all the rigors and hardship of pioneer life on their homestead. There another son, Ray, and a daughter, Gertrude, joined the family circle. Mr. Hickman passed away very suddenly at his home in Wood Lake, about three o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, December 31, at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 9 days. His oldest son, Carl preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, two brothers Guy and Rolly, one son, Ray of Cheyenne, Wyoming, two daughters, Mrs. George Pearson of Valentine, Nebr., and Mrs. Harold Beck of Ainsworth, Nebr., nine grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Mr. Hickman joined the Methodist Church in the summer of 1902. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a true friend. Funeral services were held at the Union Church in Wood Lake, Friday, January 2nd, 2:00 p. m. with the Rev. Dwight Kemling in charge. Interment was in the Wood Lake Cemetery. CHERRY COUNTY (Neb.) NEWS, 8 Jan. 1953, p. 1.
