In 1919, Grit Hainline spoke these words to a family reunion in
Bloomington, Illinois:
This story was givento me by my father, George Hainline and to him by
his father Thomas Hainline, and to him by his father Jacob Hainline, and
to him by Jacob Hainline, whowith his brother Benjamin Hainline, settled
in North Carolina in what is nowDavies County-about 7 or 8 miles east
of Mocksville, the county seat of (now Davies county) Rowan county. So
this story comes from one generation to another by tradition, which is
the best history of families obtainable by most families. The story:
Along about 1680 or 1690, two brothers (some say 3) who were Jews
living in St. Petersburg, Russia, where winters were long and bleak and
extremely cold, and their people were poor and abused, got their heads
and minds together, agreeing to move to a more agreeable climate to
better their condition. They moved by ship to someplace in Germany and
stopped for awhile, then moved by ship to Wilmington, North Carolina and
traveled up a littlenorthwest of the center of the state into the county
above named and settledabout the year 1700 near a beautiful, tumulus,
rippling stream of clear mountain water winding its way to the south and
east to the Atlantic. There, thetwo brothers married gentiles, were
prosperous and both raised families. About the time their children were
grown up, a hunter and trapper Daniel Boone, came along and wanted
company to go west across the mountains to look out a road to a great
western country where riches abounded, and two of Benjamin’s boys went.
