Action to take--write to Calumet Co./WSGS for complete record; check at Nat'l Archives about where to write-possibly Chicago Branch. Notes: I visited the church and was allowed to look at the original books. They could not be photo copied, but I was allowed to photograph them. Most of the three or four books I saw were indexed. Frau MOLLER was very helpful and had marked several of the births, christenings (taufe), and some marriages of interest. Before going, a letter was sent to the church saying we would be there and hoped to view the records. Claus emigrated abt 1866, possibly applied for first naturalization papers in Calumet Cty, WI in 1869. There was a Toenies AHLF in Calumet Co., WI, who filed a Declaration of Intent in 1859 listing country of origin as Holstein. Possibly a relative of Claus. The name was in his family. Need to check more on Toenies. Claus added John to his name after 1904, probably because of animosity toward Germans at time of WWI. I remember him as a small man with a bristly, yellow stained mustache that scratched when he kissed me. My parents spoke very little about him or his background. Have not been able to find his last resting place as of 5/95, possibly in cemetery on Hill St., Signal Hill, CA. One memory I'm sure came from him was the phrase "raus mit em". I believe "raus" is really heraus which means "out". "Heraus bekommen" means get out, literal translation from a German dictionary. Info from a baptismal letter/certificate in possession of June WALLING, Sunnyvale, California, 1994; Certificate written in German, gives birth/baptismal dates, has church seal, was in papers of Evelyn AHLF, cert. dated 20 Jan 1930; At Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1992 German desk consultant thinks Burg, Schleswig Holstein is probably church location, Burg was part of Prussia at that time, possibly in Dithmarschen; Letter received June 1995 from EV.-Lutheran Kirchengemeinde Burg/Dithmarschen confirms birth/baptism/parents as listed; Fall--1991 Filby Passenger Lists, shows natuarlization application listing Holstein as b.place. See "Naturalization" for more info.
