It will be interesting to find out why some called her Bertha. She came to America around 1910 with her grandson Arvin and possibly other family members.
She lived in a cottage behind her son Robert's house until she was 95. She was fond of gardening and loved to grow roses and was called by some of the family "Grandma of the roses". Three days before her death, she collapsed from sunstroke while in her garden. Some of the townspeople insisted that it was not right that such an old lady live alone as she desired and insisted that she live in her son's house. The story continues that in the evening she had asked for her gardening tools, and that night died.
Among the pallbearers were Emil's sons Robert and Emil Jr. Both Emil and his son were living at Pautuckett RI and Robert was living at Keene NH at the time.
According to the 1920 US Census for Epsom, NH, Bertha was living with her son Rudolph and grandson Arthur.

It was thougth that her maiden name was Leistner, but a marriage certificate for her daughter found by Gunnar Berchner shows it to be Leister.
