Mansfield's 1884 The History of Tuscarawas County, Ohioisincorrectindescribing the Samuel Mosser who settled inTuscarawaswithAbrahamMosser and who subsequently died in 1811 asAbraham'sbrother.Thisperson was Abraham's nephew Samuel, the son ofAbraham'sbrotherSamuel, who settled with other family members inColumbiana, nowMahoningCounty. The Samuel Mosser, 1745-1808, described onthis page wasnot theSamuelMosser of Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Biographical Sketch (1932):3234 'Samuel Musser Sr. was bornin1745mostlikely in Maryland. Samuel mentions himself as one ofthefourbrothers,Michael, Samuel, Daniel, and Jacob in a letterfromWashingtonCountyabout 1790 which he wrote to a York Countyofficialconcerning thesaleof some land. The letter is preserved in thearchive ofthe YorkCountyHistorical Society. There is nothing in theletter tointimate thathehad no other brothers than the ones mentioned.

Samuel Sr.'s home was in Hopewell Township of YorkCounty,Pennsylvaniaasearly as 1779.3235 According to statements ofhisgrandchildren, heandhis family were originally from Maryland,3236 butashis homeinPennsylvania was close to the Maryland line, he may havelivedatvarioustimes under the authority of either state, accordingtothecurrentlyaccepted location of the boundary line which shiftedmanytimesduringthe course of more than half a century of dispute, andwassettledofficially only after Mason and Dixon ran their famouslinein1767. Thebirth of his eldest son, Samuel Jr., was recorded intheChristLutheranChurch at York, Pennsylvania, in 1767.3237 The birthofanotherson, JohnJacob, was recorded in the Salem Reformed ChurchatHagerstown,Maryland,in 1771.3238 His appearance as a York Countytaxpayer in 1779wouldindicate only a brief residence in Maryland, unlessthebirth oftheeldest son was recorded during a visit or temporary stayinYorkCounty.Samuel Sr.'s brother Peter Sr. was also a member oftheHagerstownchurchin the 1770s3239 which may be taken as someindicationthat theirfatherMichael resided in Maryland proper beforemoving to YorkCounty, and thattwo of his elder sons remained behind for anumber ofyears atthe oldhome. Peter Sr. evidently moved up intoPennsylvania alsoas hewas in aLancaster County unit during theRevolution. AftertheRevolution, PeterSr. returned to Frederick County,Maryland, wherehecontinued to resideuntil he moved to Ohio in 1800.

In the census taken with tax returns in York County in1783SamuelSr.'sfamily was listed as one of 'six inhabitants.'3240SamuelSr.evidentlyowned land in York County before 1779 as he paid taxesonlandat thatdate, but the first land purchase which can be identifiedashiswas madein 1787.3241 In that year Samuel Sr. 'farmer' wasgrantedawarrant for atract of land of 78 acres called SnowhillinHopewellTownship, 'part ofa larger tract granted to SamuelMosser,February 23,1787.' In the sameyear he sold to an Andrew Finley 100acresof land.September 23, 1798,Andrew Finley deeded it back to him.3241It islikelythat Samuel Sr.left York County after selling his land in1787, andthathe returned toHopewell Township again in 1792. He was listedin theU.S.census of 1790in Washington County, Pennsylvania.3242 In 1800Samuelwasin Hopewelltownship again. From the several young childrenlisted bytheU.S. censusof that year in his family, he may have beengiving a hometosomechildren of his relatives.

April 27, 1801, Samuel sold his Hopewell property of 235 acrestoaJohnWinter.3243 August 24, 1801, he entered Section 13, Township9,Range1,in what is now Springfield Township of Mahoning County,3244wherehewasa neighbor of his brother Peter who went there the sameyear.Thesectionpatented by Samuel Sr. lies about two miles northofPetersburg,Ohio, directly on the Ohio-Pennsylvania line. Thepatentcertificate onthisland was granted January 22, 1806. September 6,1806,Samuel sold320acres of it to an Adam Painter,3245 retaining thesouthhalf for hisownhome. The remains of the pioneer log homesteaderected onthe southhalfof this section were still standing in 1931, whenit wasphotographedbythe writer. The property consisted of a two storyloghouse. Woodenpegswere used to fasten the timbers together, withtheexception ofsomesquare cut nails used in handmade lath, probably putonat a laterdatethan that at which the house was build. It hadevidentlybeenenlarged bya series of additions so that it was not easy totell howmanyrooms theoriginal home had. The house was used as a dwellingas lateasthe 1870s.On the premises were an excellent dug well, neatlywalledwithrock, anextremely old orchard of apple and cherry trees, andthejumbledruins ofa barn. A large lilac bush by what had evidently beenthekitchendoor, blooming in profusion, seemd to be trying to defytime'sefforts tomakewhat had once been a beautiful pioneer home a pileofdecayingrubbish.

While residing in Columbiana County, Samuel Sr. evidentlydevotedhisfulltime to farming. That he may have been engaged in somekindofcommercialenterprise as well as farming in York County mightbeinferredfrom hisaccount book, inventories as part of his estate afterhisdeath. He mayhave kept tavern, an occupation that seems to have beenafavoriteonewith this branch of the Musser family.'

Biographical Sketch (1932):3246 'Samuel Sr. is said to havebeenaprivatein Armand's Legion during the Revolution.3247 Samuel'sfirstwifewasElizabeth ___.3248 She was the mother of Samuel Jr. andofJohnJacob.3248Samuel's second wife was Anna Maria ___.3249

Samuel Sr.'s will3233 is not absolutely unique in thatitmakesthoughtfulprovisions for his widow, but the solicitude hemanifestsisnoteworthy. In many wills of the Pennsylvania Germans, wivesweregivenslightconsideration. Abraham, his brother, bequeathed his'belovedwifeMary'the munificent sum of ten dollars.'
