Obituary: Monday, Feb. 11, 1907, Fergus Falls Daily Journal John Tomhave, pioneer citizen and prominent resident of Fergus FallsTown passed away Saturday. Mr. Tomhave was a mason by trade and builtthe first brick building in this city. Mr. John Tomhave, Sr., who hasbeen seriously ill for some time past, died at his home in FergusFalls town about noon Saturday from apoplexy. Mr. Tomhave was born in Hanover, Germany, Jan. 18, 1833, being 74years of age at the time of his death. He was married Sept. 21, 1857,to Annie Marie Meier and came to the United States in 1868, settlingfirst at Frontenac, Minn. He was a stone mason and engaged in thatline of work there , remaining about a year and a half, when heremoved to West St. Paul where he followed the same occupation. In the fall of 1870 he came to this locality and took a pre-emption insection 2, Fergus Falls town. He resided there for six years, thensold and bought a farm in section 19, of the same town. He lived onthis farm until the spring of 1892 when he purchased his present farmin section 28. Fergus Falls, where he remained until the time of hisdeath. His estimable wife, with whom he lived happily for nearly fifty years,survives him and their family consisted of eleven children, nine sonsand two daughters, of whom two died in Germany and two in thiscountry. The surviving children are John J. Tomhave of Carlisletownship, H. A. Tomhave of Montevideo, Louis Tomhave of Fergus Fallstown, Mrs. Chas. Holsbauer of this city, Mrs. Ed Kemnitz of FergusFalls town, and Albert C. and George E. Tomhave who resided on thehome farm. Mr. Tomhave retired from active farm work about two yearsago, and turned the management of the farm over to these two sons. Allof the children were present at the time of his death. He is alsosurvived by to brothers and one sister, Henry Tomhave of Fergus Fallstown, Claus Tomhave of Neleville, Ill., and Mrs. Henry Boland of LakeCity. Mr. and Mrs. Tomhave would have celebrated their Golden Weddinganniversary on Sept. 21 next. Mr. Tomhave built the first brick building erected in Fergus Falls,the building that sets back from the street alongside of the NewBakery on Lincoln avenue west, and he also did some of the first masonwork in Elizabeth and Breckenridge. He was a member of the board ofsupervisors of Fergus Falls town for a number of years and no citizenwas held in higher esteem. He was a member of the German EvangelicalLutheran church, a sturdy, honest, upright, industrious citizen, a manwho faced the hardships of frontier life without flinching, and onewho was ready, willing and competent to do his full share of theworld's duties. To citizens like Mr. Tomhave, the great northwest owesa debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. The funeral will occur Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the farmhome and at 2:30 P.M. from the German Lutheran church in this city,the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Boether.
