Obituary Fergus Falls Daily Journal, Saturday, March 29, 1952 JOHN J. TOMHAVE, CITY PIONEER, DIES AT 93, CAME TO FRIBERG TOWNSHIPFROM GERMANY IN 1870 John J. Tomhave, one of the city's oldest pioneers, died early todayat Wright Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since January.He was 93 years old. Born in Hanover, Germany, July 28, 1858, he cameto the United States with his mother when he was 10 years old. Hisfather, a mason, had come here earlier. Two years later he came toFriberg township in Otter Tail county. In 1884 he bought a farm inFergus Falls township where he served as clerk of the school board andsupervisor. The family moved to Fergus Falls in 1918. The home hasbeen at 321 East Beech Avenue since 1919. The home was completelydestroyed in the tornado in 1919. His daughter, Clara, her baby and adaughter-in-law, Mrs. A. W. Tomhave, were killed. His wife, who diedApril 17, 1942, was Carlena Schmidt before her marriage. They were theparents of seven children, five of whom are living. His children are Lewis A. of Fergus Falls, Mrs. Anton (Mary) Schuetzeof this city, Mrs. Anton (Emelie) Bjerkness of Fergus Falls, Albert W.of Seattle and Mrs. Bertha Pergande. He also leaves two sisters andthree brothers, Mrs. Kate Holzbauer of Chinook, Mont., Mrs. AnnaKemmitz of Battle Lake, Louis of Fergus Falls, Albert of Erhardtownship and G. E. Tomhave of Esterville, Iowa. Mr. Tomhave was amember of the Trinity Lutheran church for many years. Funeralarrangements probably will be announced Monday.
