Isaac Trout, One of Oldest Citizens, Dead: Father of Eleven Children, Ten of Whom Are Living, Dies of Kidney Trouble, Aged Nearly 88 Years Isaac Trout, who bore the distinction of being one of the oldest residents of this city (Elkhart, Ind.) died at 11:30 o'clock, Feb. 28, 1906, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer E. (Minerva A.) Herman of 1019 Middlebury street. His death was due to old age and kidney trouble from which he had suffered many months. He was born March 10, 1818, at Lancaster County, Pa., which would make him 88 years old on the 10th of this month. His wife is still living as are ten of their children, George M. of California; W. Harvey, Franklin M. and Frederick E. of Union, Michigan; Clarence J. of Cadillac, Mich.; Harry L. of Iowa; Mrs. William M. (Flora A.) Holmes of Merrill, Mich.; Mrs. Elmer E. (Minerva A.) Herman, Mrs. Asa V. (E. Maude) Hitesman and Miss Mary E. Trout of Elkhart, Ind. This was one of the most vigorous families of this section of the country. The funeral of the father will be the first ever held at the Trout home. One daughter, Mrs. Adin I. (Margaret O.) Johnson, is dead, but she lived until she raised a large family. Prior to moving to Elkhart, the family had lived for 20 years in Union, Mich. They came here 19 years ago and since their residence here have won the esteem of a host of friends. The funeral will be held from the house on Saturday morning, March 3, 1906, at 10:30 a.m., in charge of Rev. J.E. Grimes, Castle United Brethren Church. Elkhart Truth, Mar. 1, 1906 (Revised) Isaac Trout was born 10 Mar 1818 Lancaster County, Pa. Research continues regarding his parents (see below), as he claimed to have been adopted. Isaac married circa 1850 to Mahala Daniel, perhaps in Green Twp, Summit, 0hio, where they are known to have had their first child in the following year. Mahala had been born 18 April 1829 to Earl and Margaret Weaver Daniel in Selinsgrove, Union (now Snyder), Pa. Isaac, Mahala and their new family soon moved to Elkhart County, Ind., where five additional children were born to this union, and then in about 1863 removed just a few miles north to Cass County, Mich., where an additional five children were born. Isaac and Mahala ultimately returned to Elkhart County, Ind., where Isaac died 28 Feb 1906, with Mahala joining him 21 Jun 1911. Both are buried at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Elkhart, Ind. Craig H. Trout, 2009 Isaac Trout claimed that he was adopted, after his parents had been killed by Indians; however, no evidence has been found to support this in adoption records or otherwise, and his believed birthplace of Lancaster County, Pa., had been pacified, with regard to the Indians, well before Isaac's birth. Y-DNA results of a direct paternal descendant of Isaac Trout, taken with FamilyTreeDNA in 2009, indicates that the paternal lineage origins match to a "Dickerscheid" family from Germany. Subsequent research shows the exact location in Germany to be Gau-Algesheim, Mainz-Bingen, Rheinland-Pfalz. Earliest records of a Dickerscheid family in America go back to to Lancaster County, Pa.; however, these first records pertain to a Dickerscheid born in 1839, eleven years after Isaac's birth, so additional records are being sought. AncestryDNA shows matches between several Isaac Trout descendants and those who have ancestral pedigrees going back to Johann Wendel Georg Traut. It is possible that Isaac somehow acquired the surname of Trout via his maternal line, due to unusual circumstances such as illegitimate birth, but the exact nature of any such event is presently unknown. Elkhart Truth-Original Isaac Trout is believed to have said that he was adopted, after his parents had been killed by Indians; however, no evidence of this has been found to support this in adoption records or otherwise, and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had been pacified, with regard to the Indians, well before Isaac's birth. He is also believed to have said that he was "Scots-Irish German Jew," which was not taken seriously, but which may need to be reconsidered. He is also believed to have claimed he was Pennsylvania Dutch (Palatine German). Y-DNA Test results from paternal descendant (great-great-grandson): Haplotype: J2 12 24 14 10 14 17 11 14 12 14 11 31 The J2 lineage originated in the northern portion of the Fertile Crescent where it later spread throughout central Asia, the Mediterranean (to Greece and Southern Italy by the Phoenicians), and south into India. As with other populations with Mediterranean ancestry this lineage is found within Jewish populations. Research note: Many people new to Genetic Genealogy think the J2 haplogroup is synonymous with having male Jewish ancestry. One should note that having a J2 haplogroup assignment does not necessarily indicate Jewish ancestry. The J2 haplogroup is far more ancient than the Jewish religion and is found in many lines with Mediterranean region ancient ancestry. Another relatively more recent mode for J2's entry into some parts of Europe from the Mediterranean areas could have been the Roman Legions and Roman settlements. It should be noted that the Trout (Traut) ancestry is believed to be from Rhine-Palatinate, Germany, which had once been part of the Roman Empire. Traut coat of arms found in Geo. E. Trout, 250 Year History Trout Family (Closson Press, Apollo, PA, 1991). Event: TROUT-DNA Project Line #61; See TROUT-DNA Research Project at https://www.familytreedna.com/public/TROUT_DNA_Research_Project/ Event: Pending Research 20 FEB 2009 Some researchers have suggested that Isaac Trout's parents may have been Isaac Trout and Rachel Ferree (Line #1); Y-DNA testing has now proven they were absolutely not even remotely related. Event: DNA-Proven Relationship 20 FEB 2009 As of this writing, this is a free-standing TROUT line that is -not- related to any other TROUT DNA testing results. Further analysis in 2022 shows the following: Y-DNA Test results from paternal descendant (3rd great-grandson) show a match with Timothy (Dickerscheid) Parsons, Genetic Distance 3 steps, Ancestral Surname Dickerscheid (Germany), with further analysis showing family origin in Gau-Algesheim, Mainz-Bingen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.
